There are people who hate them, but at least one person I know loves them dearly: German Jens Thiel of Functional Fate. I wrote earlier about Jens. Recently he mentioned that he had revived his blog and I promised him this post.

Kos is an Greek island. It is part of the 12 Dodecanos islands in the Aegean Sea just near the Turkish coast.
After a short occupation of the island by the Venetians and the Genoans, Kos came under the control of the Ioanniter knights in 1314 and was ruled by them until the Turks kicked them out in 1457. These knights built strongholds and one of those forts is still a ruin next to Kos city’s harbor where I took these photos when on holiday last year and thinking of Jens’ passion. “A strange place for monobloc plastic chairs” I thought.

Strange place huh? Jens feel free to copy!

white monobloc plastic chair: SERIES OF FOUND/OLD/DECAYING GARDEN CHAIRS STARTED IN 2002. THE CHAIRS ARE INDIVIDUALLY PERFORATED AND SANDED IN ORDER TO GIVE EACH ONE A NEW LIFE AND MAKE IT COLLECTIBLE.

The monobloc, a mass product made into a limited edition raises the question of its material and immaterial, societal, cultural, aesthetical and ethical values.

The monobloc’s charm lies in its democratic concept – it’s the most sold chair worldwide, everyone can own it. The project is an attempt to reveal the beauty of that idea and to make visible what lies beneath the surface.

Collection (2002-2009), old and rare monobloc models, polypropylene,
individually perforated (up to ten thousand holes each), sanded by hand.
Various sizes. Numbered limited edition of 33 unique pieces, 2009

White Billion Chairs is being distributed via Appel Design Gallery, Berlin.

transplastic
recent work by the campana brothers 5 june – 10 august 2007 albion gallery, london http://www.albion-gallery.com the transplastic series tells a fictional story: in a world made of plastic and synthetic matter, a fertile ground is laid for transgenic creations. natural fibres recover the plastic as in an immunological response: nature grows from the plastic and overpowers it. this collection encapsulates many concepts explored throughout the campana’s trajectory; revisiting material clashes with a more mature approach. it refers back to the premise, used in 2000 with the ‘shark chair’, to challenge contrasts: of nature and plastic, cold and warm, textured and smooth surfaces. at the end of 2005, the preceding years of research evolved in an organic fashion by transforming into a collection of 31 prototypes that are to be displayed for the first time at albion gallery in london.

Designer Karim Rashid is no stranger to the outdoors. Grobal, his self-watering planter, cares for our delicate floras but the Disk Chair was made to cradle us. Made of fiberglass over a steel frame, this chair is ideal for poolside or patio. We feel its curvy flattened shape is inherited from…

The Ero s Swivel chair, Photo Ultra Modern

I was wrong in my previous post: There are more nudevertisers for chairs. Only when I saw these pictures again, I realized I had seen them earlier.

At that earlier occasion I was not able to grab the photos efficiently and let it pass.

Now I have an efficient way of grabbing photos from all over the web, since I have installed a mini blog parallel to this blog: Chair Blog | Tumblr with widget and all and the possibility to read it in your News Reader.

So now I can keep you more up to date now. See for more background of a Tumblr account my other blog: Happy Hotelier – Tumblr and Organizing Your Blog(s).

About the chair

Why don’t they simply coin the chair Eros Swivel Chair? I believe they are afraid of reactions from rather puritan markets. But then: why advertise with, granted it is decent, nudity?
